"Eren, dear?"

He never liked pet names that much. He had never been fond of being called "sweetie" or "pumpkin" or anything cutesy like that, not even from his own mother when he was a child. He would fight against it and try to get Mikasa to rally alongside him, but it was never that big of a deal; everyone had always told him he was a handful of a loose cannon, even over the smallest things, and in retrospect how could he even begin to disagree with that? All his life he had done nothing for his mother, and when he couldn't save her from the fire it he was hit with the fact that he would never get the chance to pay her back for all she put up with.

"Eren?"

He grew up throughout junior high and into high school with Levi and Petra, a couple who adopted him and Mikasa a few months after they were left orphaned. Eren had been furiously stuck on the fact that Petra wasn't his mother, and never would be. She would never have long brown hair over her shoulder, she would never have the voice he heard from birth, and she would never have to deal with Eren declaring war on the neighbor's husband over a comment that went over his head but managed to make him angry anyway. He worked hard to pay Petra back from the start, even if most of the time it felt more like he was being effectively trained by Levi to behave and function properly.

"Eren, are you okay?"

But Petra would never be his mother, and Levi would never be his father. Eren's dedication to this faded over time, but he still got flustered when he would accidentally call Petra "mom" and Levi "dad," because they weren't and he was scared of replacing his dead parents too fast, too soon, without any closure that he had done everything for them he could. He did well in school, he played his sports, he did his chores, he didn't always pick fights, he was a good kid. He did everything he could've done before but better this time. It didn't take him long to realize he was doing all of this for Petra and Levi, too, or that he was motivated greatly by Levi's head pats and Petra's smiles, and he felt guilty about it. Mikasa told him he should move on, it had been five years, they have a new family now. She reminded him that he's not alone in having to accept an entire new family; she didn't need to spell out the conditions that led for Eren's mother and father to adopt her when they were very young children. Family is family.

"Eren, are you alright?"

And Eren was finally coming to terms with that. He would never stop feeling like he'd have to pay his family back someday for all they do for him, but it was less about ghosts and more about looking across the dinner table at who he had now, right now. Right now he had Petra, who was reaching out to tuck her hand under his bangs to check his forehead for high temperatures. He jumped to attention, breaking out from his spacing out he tended to do, and while Petra jumped, too, she looked relieved.

"Welcome back, Eren! You had me worried, darling."

He had never told Petra to stop calling him cutesy stupid pet names. He felt he owed that to his mother, for all those years of yelling at her about it. He figured that, from day one, Petra could call him her "pumpkin" or "sweetheart" all she damn well wanted, and he would never say a thing against it.
